About Dr. Michelle

With over 25 years of diverse experience, Dr. Michelle Elgersma provides a unique blend of traditional expertise and holistic healing through Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM). Since graduating from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1996, her career has spanned the care of farm animals, domestic pets, elite thoroughbred racehorses, as well as dedicated advocacy for feral cats, always rooted in a deep commitment to compassionate care. After earning her accreditation from the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) in 2012, she founded Kalmeren Veterinary Acupuncture, specializing in acupuncture therapy and Chinese herbs. A Fellow of the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture (FAAVA), Dr. Michelle remains deeply involved in the global veterinary community as a teacher for IVAS certification courses and the society’s current Treasurer. She is now bringing her specialized skills and gentle approach to the animals of Cape Breton.

At home, Dr. Michelle enjoys a quiet life with her husband, Steve, and their three cats: Pixel, Bean, and Blue. In her free time she likes hiking, knitting, reading, and DIY projects. After many rewarding years in Pittsburgh, she and Steve are happy to be back in Canada and have recently embraced their new home in Sydney, where they look forward to being part of the local community.
